Stories Of Ohio eBook William Dean Howells

Critic and novelist Howells seems to have written these nonfiction "stories" in the late 1890s--Ohio native William McKinley has been elected President but not yet assassinated, though the title page has no copyright date. Howells was ahead of his times in all areas, but his perpsective will still seem dated to the general or undergraduate reader. For those of us who teach and study the history and cultures of Ohio, it is an interesting text that ranges from the earliest natural history of the region through Logan's Lament and Mad Anthony Wayne, the Battle of Lake Erie, and Ohio notables like John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed).

Stories Of Ohio eBook William Dean Howells Reviews

It was offered to me for free so i took it and i'm glad i did. There was allot of interesting information i had either forgotten or was never taught in school.
I lived in the area described in the book for a few years and am interested in the history because my ancestor was supposedly the first white settler in an area of Tuscurawus county. I found it interesting.
Amazing that there was so many Indian wars in Ohio at the opening of the Northwest Territories. Ohio was a unique place. Then and now.
it is a good book and a lot of interesting stories.....still not exactly what I was looking for but as I said I learned a lot from it
This book covers a broad range of historical anecdotes related to early settlement of Ohio and makes a good primer for further study. It's style is a bit antiquated for the modern readers ear but that lends a certain charm to the storytelling.
Excellent book about Ohio history written in 1897. I think it is a better look into what was happening in early Ohio than you will find in today's history books. At times it is gruesome but I think it is accurate account of what was happening. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the early history of Ohio.
I'm still reading through this; I love reading about the history it contains. I'm wondering how old this compilation is. So far I don't think I've seen a date out of the 1890s mentioned. Even the invention of flying was indicated to be a future possibility.
